Historic World-Class Chess Tournament Held in Canada (Guelph)

Canada hosted its first-ever world-class and elite chess tournament, marking a significant milestone in the country's chess history. The event was organized with the support of Mahmud Hassain, co-organizer and Assistant Governor of Rotary District 7080; Jon Macklin, President-elect of the Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium; Robert Gillanders, Executive Director of the Chess Federation of Canada; and chess player Imran Sharif, along with other CFC members.
The tournament's expenses were covered by a dozen sponsors and partners, including the City of Guelph (Gather Here), Linamar Corporation, Guelph Police Board, Frank M. Valeriote (SV Law), University of Guelph, The United Way, SWOCL, The Grove Youth Hubs, Clunis Consulting, RLB Professional Accountants, Neighborhood Group and Danby Appliances.
The event received official recognition through several welcoming letters from the Guelph Mayor, Guelph MP, Guelph MPP, University of Guelph President, and the Rotary District Governor.
In addition to the players and their families, the Opening Ceremony was attended by dignitaries including the Guelph Mayor, Guelph MP, Rotary District Governor, Rotary President, and many Rotarians. Several Rotary leaders delivered greeting remarks, and the Closing Ceremony concluded with an inspiring message from the Rotary President.
The tournament featured six Grandmasters, a dozen International Masters, the world's top-rated female player, Under-12 competitors, and several aspiring youth talents, showcasing a remarkable level of competition and community support.
